A Look at Salem History

 From Naumkeag  To Salem 1629

Naumkeag  was a fishing and hunting land to the Algonquit Tribe. Naumkeag in the Algonkwit means, "Eel". Roger Conant Failed Governor of the
Northward  Puritan colony of Cape Ann came to Naumkeag in 1626 and set up a fishing colony of some 50 settlers. As the Naumkeag settlement started to thrive as a Cod fishing port The Dorchester Company claimed the rights of the Settlement from the Failed Massachussetts Bay Company. Instead of making the well deserved Roger Conant Governor they replaced with fellow Puritan John Endicott. John Endicott renamed the Colony "Salem" from the Arabic Sallem, or the Hebrew Shalom, meaning Peace.

Salem a city with a dark past

The troubled past of Salem seems to begin early with Endicott's many punishments, destroying the Catholic Flag of Saint George on the Salem Common an act of Treason, to punching a Colonist in the Face on Essex Street. Welcome to the city of Peace! Most people visit Salem existing territory to experience the infamous Witch histeria of 1692. 277 Salemites were acused of signing the Devil's book. 19 were hanged on Gallows Hill, and one Giles Corey"The Old Wizard" was crushed (pressed to death) where Howard street Cemetery sits today. Salemites today are split as to where Salem fits in history most favoring Salem's "Golden age of Sail" or The Happenings of 1692.

Salem and The American Revolution

Salem played a major role in America's quest for freedom. Daniel Mason and Timothy Pickering key players at "Leslie's Retreat" on 26th February 1775 300 British Regulars met 400 men from Salem and nearby Marble head and Danvers at The North Bridge at Salem's North River (close to The Commuter Rail Station today) a man from Danvers was bayoneted 2 months before Lexington and Concord blood was spilled in Salem. America's first millionare Elias Hasket Derby was a Salemite and America's most successful Privateer boldly capturing British war ships in the English Channel. Timothy Pickering wrote Washington's first military training guide "simple Discipline Of a Militia" written in 1774 in Salem. Pickering served as Adjucant General,Postmaster General,Quarter Master General at Yorktown, and Secretary of war.

To The Farthest Ports of the Rich East

In the new America Salem quickly turned from successful wartime privateering and sent her ships to China, The Baltic Sea, and exotic Sumatra. Salem was so successful in its Maritime endeavors
that China believed Salem to be a glorious Country separate from America. Names Like Cabot, Derby, and  Peabody dominated America's elite and wealthy. The War of 1812 and The French Revolution all will lead to the end of Salem's golden age of sail until salem finally just became to small compared to Ports as Boston and New York.
